Olympic Pool Upgrade

To keep the complex operating, in the last 3 years we committed an extra $750,000 for repairs and maintenance. Each year redevelopment is deferred, the higher the maintenance costs will become. If we do nothing it will lead to closing down some facilities as they become too expensive or difficult to maintain. In the 2015‒2025 Long Term Plan we estimated a redevelopment would cost $10.5m and we would seek grant funding to pay the full cost. We undertook a business case in 2017 and now know more investment is needed to make the facilities fit for our community’s future needs. We’d need to phase upgrades of the indoor and outdoor pools and still seek external funding to make any upgrade affordable. Do you agree with our preferred option?

Option 1 - A 50 Metre pool would be beneficial to the city in the long run , as we would be able to hold international meets here - bringing in a lot of money for the city.
This option also provides different indoor sporting options for the public, as well as indoor spa facilities which will draw more patrons.

On behalf of Surf Lifesaving New Zealand we support design option 3 “a fit for purpose facility” upgrade to the Gisborne Olympic Pool. The support of this option is particularly important because it retains a 50m distance pool which can be utilized for athlete and lifeguard training and also local, regional, national and potentially international swimming and surf lifesaving events. Our Eastern Region catchment spans from the Coromandel to the Bay of Plenty and down to Gisborne and within this area, the Gisborne Olympic Pool is one of two 50m pool options in the region, the other being Te Rapa in Hamilton. Retaining a 50m pool in the facility upgrade of the Olympic Pool is particularly topical for surf lifesaving because this year the Te Rapa pool is closed due to maintenance and upgrades to the pool and cannot hold the Eastern Region Pool Championship Event. In its current state the Gisborne Olympic Pool is not currently up to standard to hold this event. However, with the option 3 upgrade there is the potential to not only hold this event, but also National and International surf lifesaving and swimming events.

Could we really call it the Olympic Pools without a 50m pool? Jokes aside I agree with the viewpoint that we need to bring it up to standard as an events venue. Not just for profit margins but also the community. The extra fitness activities as well the prospect of starting up a competitive league for water polo etc are amazing things for Tairāwhiti. We need to raise the standards across the board for what we expect from our city. Social hubs are an important step in that direction.

The pool needs to be upgraded because patch jobs only work for a short time and costs more in the long run. It would be good to keep the 50m option to bring visitors to Gisborne. Will be great to not have to go outside to the changing rooms when get out of the pool.

I think the Olympic Pool is a very important community asset but think the wastewater system should be upgraded first.

Once we stop "dumping" into our ocean we can fix up our freshwater pool.

When the Olympic pool is upgraded I would like to see a move away from treating the water with the known toxin Chlorine, and wonder if we could burn some of the waste wood that washes down our rivers and is collected off Waikanae Beach to heat the pool.

Good swimming facilities including a 50m pool is very important for residents of the Gisborne District, it is also attractive for visitors. The District should provide the best opportunites for our people to learn good swimming skills, essentail lifeskills.
